Metis Month

Taanishi! (Hello)

Métis Month is celebrated in November in recognition of Louis Riel, a significant Métis leader. Every year in SD8, students and staff have opportunities to be involved in learning about Métis history and culture. In doing so, we are recognizing and celebrating the contributions of Métis people to the history of Canada! Métis communities formed their own languages, arts, social practices, and political traditions that continue to evolve today.

For our many Métis students, these learning opportunities contribute to a sense of identity and belonging and create a more positive and inclusive learning environment for all.

During the month of November, students may explore the meaning and history of the Métis sash (sayncheur flayshii), listen to fiddle (vyayloon) music, learn about jigging (la daans di Michif), or learn some words in Michif —the Métis language. They may also learn about the distinct floral art styles traditionally used by Métis peoples through beading or dot art.

We are so excited to see wonderful things happen in SD8 in November!

Pishkapmisho! (Take care)
